Today the The UTS Foundation was pleased to welcome representatives of the Wirral Community Police Team to discuss an exciting new project designed to tackle crime and anti social behaviour across the Borough.
We have just secured funding via Community Foundation for Merseyside and the High Sheriff Fund, which is designed to allow organisations utilise partnership work to provide positive ways to tackle crime and anti social behaviour. Our very own tribe member PC James Selby is helping us drive the project forward and was on hand to offer insight to the types of young people we will be working with.
The funding grant itself will be used to pay for a 16 week, 160 hour programme of structured fitness and circuit sessions to target 200 marginalised and at risk local young people (aged 11-19 year olds). They will be able to access a structured programme of health, well being and fitness classes at the Underground Training Station under the guidance of our expert coaches.
The idea is to offer a range of positive out of school activities that will engage these young people in a safe, structured environment surrounded by positive role models, such as our coaches, who can discuss the importance of sport and physical activity and how it has benefitted them and the people they work with. The scheme will, also target those who are at risk of isolation and ill heath because they engage in negative behaviours, such as smoking, poor diet and drug and alcohol abuse.
The project, one of the first of its kind on the Wirral, is due to be launched on Monday 29th May and we will be offering a series of taster sessions followed by a full timetable of activity throughout the rest of the summer months.
